Texas University Backs Off New Wi-Fi Fee

Updated: Wednesday, August 6 2014, 03:39 PM CDT

The University of Texas at Austin has backed off a new Wi-Fi fee after students complained on social media.

The Austin American-Statesman reports the fee would have cost about a dollar a month for students.

College officials say they would like student input about the new policy that would charge $3 per semester.

The fee would be for 10 gigabytes of bandwidth each week on the university's wireless network. Under that plan, students who don't pay the fee would have to use a slower network.

The money would help support the cost the university pays to provide internet access. That includes $6 million the college pays each year to maintain equipment, such as switches, routers and cables.
