Thousands Attend Austin World Cup Watch Party

Updated: Tuesday, July 1 2014, 03:57 PM CDT
World Cup fever is gripping Austin. On Tuesday, thousands of fans are expected to watch the game across the city, as the US takes on Belgium at 3 p.m. in a win-or-go-home match.

If you're able to get out of work or have the day off, you can join thousands of other fans at the Long Center to cheer them on at a free outdoor watch party.

As of early Tuesday, jumbotrons were already pulled up on the grounds and hundreds have already RSVPed on Facebook and it could get a lot bigger than that by the time the match starts.

So far it's fair to say World Cup soccer has been a huge deal in Austin. ESPN says Austin had some of the highest numbers for ratings in the country during the last match.

Members of the American Outlaws, Team USA's unofficial support group, tells us they've seen their numbers boom in Austin. They say the 1994 World Cup and Major League Soccer sparked the interest, and social media's helped it skyrocket.

"I think now we have more and more people growing up in the digital age where you can watch games from England from Spain from France on a daily basis that the growth has gone just outside of the little leagues and into the major leagues," said Jake Alexander of American Outlaws Austin.

The Long Center watch party event and parking are free. Gates open at 2 p.m. with the match starting at 3 p.m. You can bring coolers but no alcohol and keep your dogs on a leash.
