UPDATE: Driver Charged In Fatal Bastrop Wreck Takes Own Life

Updated: Tuesday, August 5 2014, 05:10 PM CDT

Tues. 8/5/14 1:30 p.m. UPDATE: Austin police say Suzanna Hodgson has been found dead at her home in Northwest Austin on Greystone Drive. They say her death is being investigated as a suicide.

The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office says she was found Monday at around 5 p.m.

A Central Texas woman is facing charges after her car slammed into a pickup and semi that had stopped for a traffic light. It happened on Hwy 71 at FM 1209 west of Bastrop.

The pickup and the crossover SUV that hit it burst into flames. The driver of the pickup was pinned in and died in the flames, but a witness told us others rescued his passenger and the driver of the SUV that hit them.

DPS identified the driver of the SUV as Suzanna Hodgson, 28. She was jailed charged with intoxication manslaughter.

The intersection of Hwy 71 and FM 1209 can surprise you if you're not paying attention. You're cruising at highway speed on Hwy 71 for four or five miles leaving Bastrop and suddenly there's a traffic light.

Bastrop County Judge Paul Pape says, "We've been in touch with TxDOT for many months expressing concern about this intersection."

Judge Pape says traffic on Hwy 71 has doubled in recent years. He'd like to see an overpass at the intersection with FM 1209 like the new one at Hwy 20. In the meantime he adds, "There might be some things TxDOT can do, maybe some earlier warning lights or maybe some rumble strips that would alert drivers that there is a stop light ahead."

Until then it's up to us to remember this is a highway, not a freeway. You might have to stop at any time.
