UT President Comments On Arrest Of Student For Terrorist Charges

Updated: Thursday, June 19 2014, 06:40 PM CDT

Investigators remain tight-lipped about two Central Texans facing terror charges, but today University of Texas President Bill Powers spoke to KEYE TV about the arrest of one of his students.

Rahatual Khan is a full-time student at UT who is currently on summer break. Wednesday, federal agents raided his Round Rock home and arrested the 23-year-old. Authorities say Khan referred to himself in internet chat room as jihadi.

UT President Bill Powers says he found out about the arrest from federal agents, "I was informed about it through the FBI and the FBI is still ongoing with their investigation and asked us not to comment further on it."

Khan is one of two suspects accused of providing material support to terrorists. They each face up to 15 years in federal prison and up to a $250,000 fine.

Their first court hearing is set for Friday at 2:30 p.m.
