Veteran Wounded By Grenade Gets Medal Of Honor

Updated: Thursday, June 19 2014, 06:33 AM CDT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is presenting the Medal of Honor to a veteran who took the blow from a grenade to protect a fellow Marine in Afghanistan.

Retired Cpl. William "Kyle" Carpenter will receive the medal during a ceremony Thursday in the East Room of the White House. He's the eighth living recipient to be chosen for the Medal of Honor for actions in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Carpenter was wounded in 2010 while guarding a patrol base in a small village in Afghanistan's Helmand province. When enemy forces lobbed grenades into the base, Carpenter placed himself between a grenade and another Marine.

Carpenter lost his right eye and suffered other injuries. He was medically retired last summer.

Carpenter is a Flowood, Mississippi, native and studies at the University of South Carolina.
