Wash. Issues First Pot Shop Licenses

Updated: Monday, July 7 2014, 11:49 AM CDT

Owners of some Washington state businesses that will be allowed to start selling marijuana tomorrow morning haven't had much sleep. They were notified in a middle-of-the-night e-mail that they'll finally be able to open for business.

The state says it wanted to give the first two dozen stores a few hours extra notice so that they'll have more time to get pot on their shelves by tomorrow morning.

It's been a year and eight months since the state's voters legalized the drug for adults over 21.

Among the businesses is just one store in Seattle, Cannabis City. Owner James Lathrop plans to open his doors at noon tomorrow.

Big crowds, high prices and shortages are expected for the historic first sales.

Marijuana sales began in January in Colorado, the only other state that has legalized marijuana.
