Professor Dumpster Upgrades To AC

Updated: Monday, August 4 2014, 07:12 PM CDT

Just six months ago when Huston-Tillotson professor Dr. Jeff Wilson embarked on his dumpster living journey it looked nothing like a home.

"The first time I stepped into this dumpster it was a used dumpster," Wilson said.

Fast forward six months later and the 36 square foot dumpster resembles a tiny home, with a bed, lights and storage -- and even a sun roof.

"If you're ever sleeping in a dumpster you want to be able to see the stars, it's a romantic place," Wilson said.

And what the professor calls the ultimate studio apartment is now equipped with AC.

"It does get down to 72 now consistently here at night," Wilson said.

This now completes phase two of the sustainable living dumpster project and soon will kick off phase three.

"In the third phase, the sustainable one, we will actually have solar panels a very efficient air conditioning system, will have LED lights rather than regular ones, and we will see if we can get to one percent of a regular home's energy and water use," Wilson said.

Wilson plans to live in the dumpster for at least another year to keep track of how much energy can be saved by downsizing.
