Border Patrol agents arrest 47-year-old Mexican man with 7 drunken driving convictions

Border Patrol agents arrested a 47-year-old Mexican man with seven drunken driving convictions on Thursday, when he crossed the Rio Grande near Hidalgo, according to the criminal complaint against him.

Agents arrested Jose De Jesus Cano-Rios, 47, a Mexican citizen who lived in Edinburg until 2008, when state District Judge Rose Reyna Guerra sentenced him to 10 years in prison. The federal government deported Cano on Nov. 12, 2016, through Brownsville.

"The Defendant claims to have illegally entered the United States on February 7, 2017, near Hidalgo, Texas," according to the criminal complaint.

Court records show Cano was convicted of at least seven drunken driving offenses from December 1992 to June 2008:

  • On March 26, 1993, Cano was convicted of driving while intoxicated.
  • On June 1, 1994, Cano was convicted of driving while intoxicated.
  • On April 29, 1996, Cano was convicted on two counts of driving while intoxicated in separate cases.
  • On Jan. 7, 2000, Cano was convicted of driving while intoxicated-third or more.
  • On July 6, 2006, Cano — under the alias Juan Pablo Rios Ramirez — was convicted of driving while intoxicated-third or more.
  • On July 2, 2008, Cano was convicted of driving while intoxicated-third or more.

He's now charged with illegal re-entry.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Dorina Ramos ordered Cano held without bond.

Court records don't list an attorney for Cano, who remains in federal custody.
