Investigators say a man kidnapped a woman at a Bastop business Wednesday afternoon and shot and killed her when he was later confronted by deputies in southeast Travis County.
The shooting near the Hwy 71 and Burch Drive intersection, just east of SH 130 and north of Del Valle High School.
The Travis County Sheriff's Office says at approximately 1:30 p.m. the suspect entered the Sports Clips in Bastrop and kidnapped a female employee at gunpoint. They then left the area westbound on Hwy 71.
A BOLO was put out to area law enforcement on the incident. At the same time, students at Del Valle High School were protesting and deputies were providing security and blocking traffic. When the suspect and the woman encountered heavy traffic their vehicle turned off the highway and stopped in a church parking lot, the sheriff's office says.
Deputies saw the vehicle with both doors open and went to investigate -- that's when they saw the suspect and the woman walking in a field behind the church. When the deputies approached, the suspect shot the woman. Deputies fired on the suspect but the man shot himself in the head. The woman died at the scene. It's unclear if the deputies' gunfire actually hit the suspect, investigators say.
The suspect is in critical condition at the South Austin Medical Center.
