Prince tribute band set to perform at Paramount Theatre
The Paramount Theatre in Austin is lit in purple in honor of Prince. That's not the only tribute happening at the Moontower Comedy Festival this weekend. A tribute band called "Princess" will perform Saturday night. The band is comprised of Maya Rudolph of Saturday Night Live fame and her college roommate, now jazz musician Gretchen Lieberum. While Rudolph is a comedian, the band is serious in its devotion to Prince. Saturday's show will be packed with people at the Paramount who share the love.
"Moontower is the best festival for comedy in the country," said Diva a festival goer from Denver.
Life has a funny way of creating unexpected moments. The Prince fan who shares an affinity for only one name wasn't planning on seeing "Princess", until now.
"Prince really was somebody who was fundamental to my 80's," said Diva.
Diva studied music in college and says Prince gave rocker kids like her the okay to go glam pop.
"It would be worth it to see a little bit of a tribute, maybe a little bit of a wake and then a celebration of his music," said Diva.
"There is a fundamental vibe at this festival," said Paramount's CEO & Executive Director Jim Ritts.
"I think at the end of the day, Prince was so many things but I think there was one thing he was universally and that was an entertainer," said Ritts.
And an amazing musician. Someone Austinites revere.
"I think there will be a moment," said Ritts.
A moment that wasn't planned but will be remembered.
"This band is incredible. Maya and Gretchen are such devotees of Prince. But as Maya would say, this isn't a mockery. This is a reverence that we have and what we're going to be doing is, we celebrate this man's life and what he did," said Ritts.
