Austin Police are looking to learn more details after a rash of gun violence along I-35 in Austin early Saturday morning.

There were reports of three separate shootings within five miles of each other, and they all happened in a matter of only about three hours.

Austin police have not said whether or not the shootings were connected and have not yet commented. So far, there are no reports of any serious injuries.

“I heard the shots fired,” says Kurry Peltier, “And then ten minutes later, heard more shots.”

He says hundreds of people turned out for party at a short-term rental property down the street from his home on Giles Street in East Austin on Friday night.

“I could hardly pull into my driveway. There were cars all the way over both sides of the street,” Peltier says.

Peltier says he heard loud popping noises coming the rental property, but at first, he and his friends didn’t know what they’d heard.

“We just assumed it was fireworks, because we didn’t hear screams, and there was hundreds of people on the street. I saw people duck behind cars,” says Peltier.

Other neighbors say that after the shots sounded off, people came stampeding through their yards and that more shots were then fired toward a family’s home down the street.

Then at 2:45 a.m., there were reports of a shooting 3.5 miles away on E Odell St. Neighbors say it was also a short-term rental.

The shooting happened across from Carolyn Crawford’s house, and she says gun violence has been on the rise near her home.

“It’s bad. It’s bad,” said Crawford, “Here recently, two people put a gun to my son’s head and stole his wallet.”

At 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Austin Police responded to shots fired in a parking lot about 5 miles away on 7th and I-35. It happened across the interstate from Austin Police Headquarters.

21-year old Joshua Hodge of Houston, who told police he was in town for SXSW, was arrested. According to a police report, officers found a 45 Caliber Springfield handgun and drugs in his car.

The report says three other men were with Hodge, and police say one of them told them that Hodge had fired the weapon into the air after struggling with an unknown male over a backpack.
