  • Insurance Coverage for Varicose Veins

    Insurance Coverage for Varicose Veins

MYTH: Varicose and spider veins are cosmetic, treatment is expensive, and it’s not covered by insurance.

TRUTH: Spider and varicose veins are an indication of venous insufficiency – a medical condition. Therefore, most health insurance policies and Medicare cover treatment.

Things You Should Know Varicose Veins as a Medical Condition

Now that you may have a new and improved health insurance plan, or health insurance for the first time, you may be wondering about insurance coverage of varicose veins. As vein disease is a medical condition, Medicare and private insurance cover most vein treatments. However, rules and requirements vary from carrier to carrier. Make sure the office staff is knowledgeable on the subject, specifically with the rules for the conservative treatment pre-conditions that can develop over time.

It’s important to dispel the myth that venous insufficiency is just a cosmetic issue. Leaving venous issues untreated can eventually lead to much larger problems. Venous insufficiency can be the underlying cause for a plethora of other conditions, including venous stasis dermatitis, lower extremity cellulitis, lower-extremity edema, restless legs syndrome and leg cramps.  When patients have venous insufficiency symptoms, physicians often only check some of the obvious explanations and do not delve deeper to look for the possibility of venous reflux as an underlying cause.

For example, patients with venous insufficiency may experience leg cramps: when patients report this symptom, physicians often check potassium and calcium levels, but they seldom refer patients for a venous Doppler exam. They fail to make a proper diagnosis, even if patients’ symptoms are worse after standing, or if they have physical signs of venous insufficiency, such as spider veins or skin changes. There’s a large percentage of people walking around with venous problems who aren’t getting the evaluation or treatment they need. At Bunker Vein, we are dedicated to treating the root cause: venous insufficiency and other vein diseases. Chronic venous insufficiency is a long-term condition. It occurs because a vein is partly blocked, or blood is leaking around the valves of the veins.

Risk factors for venous insufficiency include:

    §  Age

§  Family history of this condition

§  Sitting or standing for long periods of time

    §  Sedentary lifestyle

§  Injury (broken bone) or major surgery on the leg or foot

§  History of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the legs

§  Being female (related to levels of the hormone progesterone)

    §  Being tall

    §  Obesity

    §  Pregnancy

Chronic venous insufficiency tends to get worse over time. By taking self-care steps, you may be able to ease discomfort and slow the condition from getting worse. It is likely that you will need medical procedures to treat the condition.
