Austin Blackhawks host Bowl-a-thon
Back in 2012, we at KEYE TV first introduced you to the Austin Blackhawks. They're a Beep Baseball team. Beep baseball is the adaptive version of the game for the blind and visually impaired.
Last summer, the Blackhawks won their second straight and 9th overall Beep Baseball World Series.
And as world champs, they get the honor of having a display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. In Cooperstown, NY, the Blackhawks share the hall with the greatest to ever play the sport.
However, Saturday, it wasn't baseball, but bowling for the Hawks. Highland Lanes hosted the 23rd annual Blackhawks Bowl-a-thon.
It's the biggest fundraiser of the year for the team. The proceeds will help pay for the Hawks trip to the 2016 Beep Baseball World Series, where they hope to win their third straight title. The Blackhawks also hope to win another championship to keep their jersey hanging in the Hall of Fame.
"Just thinking about that chokes me up," said Blackhawks designated hitter Steve Puryear. "It's incredible they brought us into the Baseball Hall of Fame. To be a part of that is just crazy."
"To know that we're hanging in the Hall of Fame is just unbelievable," added head coach Jonathan Fleming. "When we found out, we couldn't even fathom that."
The 2016 Beep Baseball World Series takes place July 24-31 in Ames, IA.
