Alumni Beat the Longhorns

Updated: Friday, February 10 2012, 02:31 PM CST
The Texas Exes got RBI singles from Kevin Keyes and Kyle Russell in the eighth inning to earn a 2-0 win over the Texas Longhorns in the annual Alumni Game as part of Fan Appreciation Day festivities at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Saturday afternoon.

The game was scoreless through seven innings before the Alumni struck for the game’s only runs. With one out, Huston Street singled to centerfield and Tant Shepherd doubled to put two runners in scoring position. With two outs, Cameron Rupp drew a walk to load the bases. Keyes singled to leftfield to plate Street for the go-ahead run and Russell added the insurance run with a single to rightfield.

The Longhorns best chance to score came in the seventh inning. Alex Silver drew a walk and Jackson Mellina was hit by a pitch to start the frame. With one out, Kirby Bellow singled to rightfield and Alex Silver was given the wave-around to home, but he was thrown out at the plate with a perfect throw from Drew Stubbs in rightfield.

The highlight of the game was the first inning when Roger Clemens took the mound for the alumni and fanned two of the three batters he faced. Huston Street, Andrew McKirahan, Austin Wood, James Russell, Chance Ruffin, Bryan Herrera, Cole Green and Brandon Workman all added one inning of scoreless relief in the shutout.

Nathan Thornhill started for the Longhorns, allowing one hit and striking out two over 2.0 scoreless innings. Parker French and Corey Knebel retired all three batters they faced in the third and ninth innings, respectively. Kirby Bellow, John Curtiss, Hoby Milner and Dillon Peters each worked one shutout frame. Justin Peters yielded four of the Alumni’s nine hits and both runs.

Russell and Rupp each logged two hits for the Alumni, with Rupp going 2-for-3 with one double. Mark Payton, Erich Weiss, Kevin Lusson and Kirby Bellow accounted for Texas’ four hits.

The Longhorns begin the season on Feb. 17 when they begin a three-game series with the Duke Blue Devils at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.Alumni Beat the Longhorns
