Brian Orakpo Brings Camp To Austin For First Time

Updated: Wednesday, July 11 2012, 09:08 PM CDT
With 22 career sacks as a Longhorn, Brian Orakpo spent four seasons making an impact in Austin.  However, this week, the Texas Ex was in town to tackle something different.

100 youngsters were on hand at Saint Michael's Academy for Orakpo's first youth camp in his college town.  However, the campers aren't the only ones Rak is dropping knowledge on this summer.  Orakpo's Redskins traded-up to pick former Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III in April's NFL Draft.  And in Washington, D.C., a town divided into red and blue, Orakpo says the 'Skins are no longer green with envy when it comes to other NFC East quarterbacks.

"You have [Tony] Romo and [Michael] Vick (Eagles) and Eli [Manning]," said Orakpo.  "The Redskins, we had a void at that position.  But we finally got our guy and he had a fantastic college career."

Orakpo and Griffin III have more in common than just being Redskins first round draft picks from Big 12 schools.  Many UT fans and Baylor fans are also Cowboys fans, which makes rooting for the Redskins, Dallas's divisional rival, much harder than you may think.

"They kind of forget that I play for the Washington Redskins," said Orakpo.  "They just still stick with the UT thing so it's all good.  They all still have love for me, they want for me to do well, and that's the same thing RG3 is going through.  It's kind of ironic but they wish us the best."

And by bringing his camp here to Austin, Orakpo probably won a few more fans over.
