Getting to Know Bo Porter

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 09:47 PM CDT
New Houston Astros manager Bo Porter played college football at Iowa. He started at defensive back for the Hawkeyes in the 1992 Rose Bowl. Now Porter gets to tackle the job of rebuilding the Astros, a team that has lost 100 games in back to back seasons.

The Astros gig is Porter's first managerial job in the Major Leagues, but he's no stranger to the game or to Houston. The Washington Nationals third base coach makes his home in the Bayou City and his wife is a Houston native. Porter even started a select baseball program in Houston several years ago.

Matt Stuart, a former pitcher at Southwestern University in Georgetown played for Bo Porter from 2003 to 2005 with the Texas Hawkeyes. Stuart says even back then, he could tell Bo knows baseball and was destined for big things.

"You could definitely tell that he was moving on to bigger and better things pretty quickly," Stuart told KEYE TV sports. "Everything was very structured."

Porter's fiery demeanor is one of his staples.

"Baseball is a long game with a long season, so its easy to go through the lulls of it," said Stuart. "[Bo] wont let happen, he's going to be energetic every time. It's not a fake energy either, and that's really obvious."
