Longhorns Win In Extra Innings

Updated: Tuesday, March 6 2012, 09:07 PM CST
Senior outfielder Tim Maitland hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Texas Longhorns a 2-1 win over the Dallas Baptist Patriots at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night.

The Longhorns had just three hits through the first 11 innings, but got a runner on base to start the 12th when Alex Silver blooped a single into the Bermuda triangle in centerfield. Taylor Stell pinch-ran for Silver and moved to second when Kirby Bellow bounced a bunt back to the pitcher for the sacrifice. Jordan Etier was intentionally walked to set up the double play. Mark Payton hit a slow roller to shortstop, but was able to beat out the relay throw to second to put runners on the corners with two outs. Maitland bounced a 1-0 offering deep into the hole on the left side of the infielder. DBU’s shortstop was able to get to the grounder, but with no possible play at first to get the mercurial Maitland he attempted a throw to third to try and retire Etier before the run scored, but that was a futile effort and Stell touched home for the game-winner.

Six Longhorns pitchers combined to allow just one run and five hits over 12.0 innings. Corey Knebel (1-0) earned the victory, pitching a scoreless 12th inning, allowing one hit while striking out one. Parker French pitched 4.0 shutout innings (innings eight through 11), allowing two hits and striking out one. Nathan Thornhill and John Curtiss each tallied two scoreless innings.Longhorns Win In Extra Innings
