Ricky Williams to Coach at UIW

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 09:47 PM CDT

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – University of the Incarnate Word head football coach Larry Kennan has been in conversation with former University of Texas and NFL running back Ricky Williams about an assistant coaching position on his staff.

“Ricky reached out to me about getting into coaching,” said Kennan.  “We have an opening and he is looking to get into coaching so I think it is a good fit.  His experience will be a big help to our staff and players and I think he will have a positive effect on our recruiting efforts.”

Williams retired from the NFL after the 2011 season with just over 10,000 career rushing yards and over 2,500 receiving yards.  He played for the New Orleans Saints, Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens during his 11 year career.  At the University of Texas, Williams finished his career with 21 NCAA records and was the 1998 Heisman Trophy winner.

“We knew that the move to Division I would increase the talent pool of candidates for staffing positions as they came available,” said UIW Athletic Director Mark Papich.  “When Coach Kennan approached me regarding Ricky as a potential addition to our staff it reinforced what we already believed to be true.  The potential to bring someone with the athletic experience of Ricky Williams to work with our student-athletes will enhance their exposure to elite level football.”

Williams has not officially been hired by the University and still needs to go through the normal Human Resources procedures required of all staff.
