Sanya's "Mane" Event: Richards-Ross Prepares for Third Olympics

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 09:47 PM CDT
If Sanya Richards-Ross is feeling the heat, you sure wouldn't know it.

"I'm not letting myself get overwhelmed with the heavy load," says Richards-Ross.

The six-time world champion who has owned the American record in the 400 meters for six years, has yet to capture an individual gold medal at the Olympics.

"It will be the ultimate for me, what I've been working on for 20 years now, since I was seven I started running," said the former Longhorn.

In those 20 years, Sanya says she's never felt better than she does right now.  And her 2012 results back that up.  She punched a ticket to her third Olympic games by running the fastest time in the world this year at last month's U.S. Olympic trials.

"I have not been reading a lot of articles," admitted Richards-Ross.  "I know I started out as not the favorite, now I'm back to being the favorite, who knows?"

Richards-Ross is the heavy favorite heading to London, but the prelims for the 400m are not until August 3rd.  That means she'll go 40 days between competitive races.  So to keep from getting bogged down by expectations, Sanya has found a way to stay on track by getting off the track.

Sanya, her sister, and her Mom have owned The Hair Clinic in Central Austin for three years.  Surrounded by family and stylists, Richards-Ross has plenty of people to keep her head (and her hair) in good shape.

"It is nice to have something that is so far and different away from what I do every single day, to come to a relaxing environment like this," said Richards-Ross.

She's as well-known for being fashionable as she is for being fast, so what's on tap for her look in London?

"I'm not sure if it's going to be long, straight, curly, I don't know yet, but it's still going to be blonde with my braid."

Locks of gold.  A color Sanya hopes will be displayed on her head, and around her neck in London.Sanya's "Mane" Event: Richards-Ross Prepares for Third Olympics
