UT Baseball Starts Season with 2 Wins

After an hour break from the first leg of the doubleheader, the No. 13 Texas Longhorns fell behind early but bounced back to beat the Duke Blue Devils 5-3 on Saturday evening at the UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

The Blue Devils took the lead with two runs in the top of the second. Hoby Milner hit Will Pinwica-Worms with a pitch and a double by Jordan Betts put two runners in scoring position.  After Andrew Istler struck out, Andy Perez bounced a grounder to third base, plating Pinwica-Worms and Betts scored and Perez advanced to second on a throwing error by the Longhorns’ Erich Weiss.

The Longhorns claimed control in the bottom of the second by scoring three runs.  Jonathan Walsh singled to right field, advanced to second after Christian Summers walked and moved to third on a single by Tim Maitland. With bases loaded, Mark Payton doubled down the third base line, plating both Walsh and Summers.

Brooks Marlow gave the Texas the 3-2 lead with a sacrifice fly to left field, driving in Maitland.
Milner (1-0) earned the win yielding three runs, two earned, on four hits, two walks and while striking out three over 5.0 innings. Parker French worked 3.0 scoreless innings with two hits and two walks. Corey Knebel worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second save of the day.

Payton led the Texas offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two doubles.
Texas and Duke wrap of the series with a 12 noon game on Sunday.

In the first game, freshman Brooks Marlow blasted a pair of home runs in his first collegiate game to lead the Texas Longhorns to a 4-0 win over the Duke Blue Devils in the 2012 season opener at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Longhorns relied on strong pitching performances by Nathan Thornhill and Corey Knebel to coast to the win.

Thornhill (1-0) earned the victory, allowing no runs, only three hits and one walk while striking out two in five scoreless innings. Knebel closed out the game with two strikeouts and no hits in the last two innings to pick up his first save of the season.
