Austin Police Officer Helps Save Residents During Apartment Fire

An Austin police officer helped evacuate residents from an apartment fire in East Austin this morning.

The fire broke out just before 8 a.m. at 2902 Sweeney Lane just off of Manor Road between 51st and Springdale Road. (See raw video)

The Austin Fire Department says Gary Griffin was doing an elementary school initiative. He was driving on Sweeney Lane going from Harris to Pecan Springs Elementary School.  He noticed smoke coming out of the apartment complex from the attic area. Griffin started knocking on doors and evacuated three apartments.

A total of six apartments were involved.  No one was hurt.

Griffin said he did not hear any smoke alarms going off.

Police are diverting traffic on northbound Manor Road on to eastbound Sweeney Lane. Traffic is also being diverted from Manor Road on to Wheless Lane.
