Police: Houston Mom Provokes Her Daughter Into A Fight; Then Joins In
A Houston mother accused of jumping in to help her 13-year-old daughter win a fist fight with another teenager says she was just trying to break up the fight.
The brawl was caught on video.
Nicole Curtis and her husband, Charles Fields are charged with injury to a child. Police say she provoked their daughter to fight her opponent last weekend. Curtis and Fields then jumped into the fight when they realized their daughter was losing, court documents say.
But Curtis claims what you see on the video is her trying to break up the fight.
"I did not jump on anybody's child like that because I got six kids of my own. I wouldn't want anybody to do that to one of my kids," she said.
But the footage also shows her husband taking down their daughter's opponent.
Their daughter, seen in the white shirt and pink shorts, says the girl she was fighting with is a former close friend, who recently turned on her at school. She says her mom and dad didn't push her to fight.
"My momma and my daddy dropped me off at the basketball court," the daughter says. "Her and her sister kept saying they was going to jump me. I wasn't scared. I didn't want to fight her because it wasn't worth it. We were fighting over nothing. It was over a boy."
"I'm not a bad parent," Curtis said. "I did not get out there and jump on the girl. I wouldn't do anything like that to jeopardize my freedom away from my kids."
She admits she should have done things differently. She wants to apologize to the other family.
"It really does hurt me that it went down like this and I got this stuff on my back. It's not the parents. It's the teenagers out here getting into it, fighting and stuff," Curtis said.
Records show that Fields has a criminal history that includes making terroristic threats and drug possession.
