Leander ISD Bus Driver; Police Investigating Assault


A Leander Independent School District bus driver has been fired, and Cedar Park police are investigating an alleged assault.

Police say their investigating a reported assault on a 9-year-old student by the driver on Dec. 5. The bus had departed from Cox Elementary School and was in the process of transporting students home when the incident occurred.

Surveillance video from the bus is under review. Police would not discuss what was seen on it. No charges have yet been filed.

According to Leander ISD spokesperson Veronica Sopher, Helmut Derer, 67, was fired following the incident.

She said the district is working with police but could not discuss the details of the case or release further details about the driver.
