Austin Police Enforcing "No Refusal" New Year's Weekend

The Austin Police Department says they will enforce a "No-Refusal" initiative for the New Year's weekend.

The initiative will start at 9 p.m. on Friday and end on Tuesday at 5 a.m.

"No-Refusal" means that DWI suspects that refuse to voluntarily give a breath or blood specimen will have blood drawn for testing anyway. Those found to have a blood alcohol concentration of .15 or above will be charged with a Class A Misdemeanor, which carries a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a $4,000 fine for the first time offenders.

APD says about 26 percent of this year’s traffic fatalities have been alcohol related.
