State Pensions Target Of GOP Comptroller's Next Report
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Republican Comptroller Susan Combs is spotlighting state pensions in the last of four reports from her office on public money in Texas.
The report due Tuesday from the state's chief accountant follows similar breakdowns on taxes and local debt. Combs has said the focus of the series is to increase transparency and empower voters with knowledge.
Yet there's also a whiff of politics behind the reports. Combs is widely rumored to be considering a run for lieutenant governor in 2014. Issues like rising debt loads have been gaining steam in recent years some conservatives.
Combs is wrapping up the reports on the eve of the next legislative session. Lawmakers are waiting on her office to announce how much money is available for the next two-year budget.
