Glass Found Austin School's Cafeteria Food

The Austin Independent School District removed sneeze guards from 18 schools after shards of glass were discovered in cafeteria food.

On Nov. 29, a food service worker at Allison Elementary School in Southeast Austin saw glass in a serving of pinto beans.  School employees threw out the food containers that were covered by the broken sneeze guard.

About 100 pre-k and kindergarten students went through the lunch line before the glass was spotted

The district says there is no evidence that any student consumed any of the glass.  The school’s nurse and teachers monitored students closely. Parents were notified about the incident.

While Stephen Pont, Medical Director of AISD says glass can pass through a child’s system without any problems, some side effects can occur.

“First when it's in the mouth it can cause some bleeding, when it passes through the intestines it can cause some vomiting or little tears in the intestines and that produce blood in your vomit or blood in your stool,” says Dr. Pont.

The school district has now removed sneeze guards from 17 other schools. They are:
  • Williams Elementary
  • Kocurek Elementary
  • Kiker Elementary
  • Sunset Valley Elementary
  • Odom Elementary
  • Pleasant Hill Elementary
  • Langford Elementary
  • Widen Elementary
  • Dawson Elementary
  • Sanchez Elementary
  • Allison Elementary
  • Jordan Elementary
  • Ridgetop Elementary
  • Reilly Elementary
  • Webb Primary
  • Dobie Pre-K Center
  • Walnut Creek Elementary
  • Doss Elementary
The manufacturer of the sneeze guard, Moduserv, is paying to replace them.
