Search On For Man That Dragged A Horse Behind A Pickup Truck In Bastrop County
It’s a horrific case of animal abuse; a show pony nearly dragged to death behind a pickup truck. And the search is on for the man accused of the crime.
It happened on Nov. 10 at a picturesque ranch in Bastrop County. Sheriff’s Department Criminal Investigations Supervisor Sgt. Ric Cole says he’s never seen an animal abuse case like this before.
“To think that someone would hurt an animal like that it’s just, it's hard,” said Sgt. Cole.
An arrest warrant was issued for Mariano Resendiz Villafuerta. He boarded the horse at the ranch in Bastrop County, and according to deputies, was training it as a show horse.
On that Saturday afternoon in November, deputies say Villafuerta tied his horses' reigns to the hitch of his pickup truck and took off.
“He was drug at a high speed until the horse couldn't keep up,” said Sgt. Cole. “And then when the horse fell, he drug it.”
For about 150 yards the horse was dragged across concrete and gravel. The injuries were so severe to the animal that pictures taken shortly after the incident show cuts so deep the horses’ muscle is exposed.
“He obviously had lost his temper or was angry about something, and he took it out on the horse by dragging it,” speculated Sgt. Cole.
Sheriff’s deputies took the horse to a local veterinary clinic and in recent weeks the horse was transferred to an animal rescue shelter. Pictures taken this week show the horse’s condition improving and the cuts healing.
But the man who deputies say inflicted so much pain on the animal is nowhere to be found.
The suspect identified himself to neighbors in the area as Mariano Resendiz Villafuerta. That’s the name on the registration for the white Ford F150 he was last seen driving.
According to the deputies’ records search, there is no social security number on record for that name, nor is there a driver's license.
If you recognize Villafuerta or the F150 pickup truck, deputies are asking for you to call 911 or your local law enforcement agency.
Villafuerta is facing one count of animal cruelty.
