City To Investigate Why Austin Traffic Deaths Skyrocketed In 2012

The Austin City Council voted Thursday to analyze why so many people died in traffic crashes last year.

In 2012, 78 people died on Austin road, an increase of 44 percent from 2011. Fatalities had been dropping since 2004.

Council Member Laura Morrison and Bill Spelman sponsored the resolution.   City Manager Marc Ott will work with the Austin Police Department, the Transportation Department, the Public Works Department and other local or state agencies to perform an analysis of the causes.

Morrison says the work could be done internally without any extra funding.
