City Delays Vote On 24 Hour Walking Trails Plan

The Austin City Council has postponed a decision to make some hiking trails 24 hours.

The plan would create a year-long pilot program to allow walking and biking 24/7 and waive the park curfews for three of Austin's most popular hike and bike trails: the Ann and Roy Butler trail running along Lady Bird Lake, the Shoal Creek Greenbelt Trail, and the Johnson Greenbelt Trail.

The city would have to consider more lighting for the trails, hiring more park rangers and getting more police officers to patrol them.  According to a memo sent to top officials in December from the Assistant City Manager's office, those actions would cost $3.1 million.

The council will take up the proposal on Jan. 31.
