Kidnapping Mistake Leaves Sheriff Skeptical

McALLEN, Texas (AP)- South Texas authorities say a man reported that he was kidnapped by mistake in a town near the Mexican border.

Jorge Cedillo told the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office that gunmen took him from his house in Alamo Wednesday night and released him Friday morning after questioning him for about eight hours.

The Sheriff's Office says when he was released, the armed men told Cedillo that he was the wrong person.

Sheriff Lupe Trevino told the McAllen Monitor that Cedillo didn't have apparent links to criminal organizations.

The sheriff says authorities seized 800 pounds of marijuana from a car registered to him in 2008.Cedillo, from Reynosa, Mexico, was not charged in that case.

Trevino says the circumstances surrounding the reported kidnapping leave him with "a lot of skepticism."
