A gunman, who injured an Austin police officer Monday, first robbed and opened fire inside a store, according to Austin Police.
Mark Fruge, 51, is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and three counts attempted capital murder.
Police say at about 3 p.m., Fruge robbed the Fallas Discount Store near Capital Plaza off I-35. An armed guard was dropping off money. Fruge took the money and the guard's gun, according to police. As he left, he fired three shots at a screaming clerk. She was not hit.
A witness followed the suspect in a car. Police chased the car as it headed toward the Springdale Shopping Center on Hwy 183 near Manor Road.
Fruge stopped, got out of the car and fired several times at officers, according to police. Officer Roosevelt Granderson was hit in the knee with a piece of glass from a shattered window. He had surgery and is doing well.
Fruge then carjacked a driver at gunpoint and ordered him to drive him to another location, police say. The driver called police who arrested Fruge at his apartment at near Hwy 290 and Springdale Road.
