Boy Scouts Recruit Help To Restore Burned Park

The Boy Scouts of America are recruiting volunteers to help reforest a popular Central Texas campground devastated by 2011 wildfires.
The Texas AM Forest Service says nearly half of the 5,000-acre Griffith League Scout Ranch was left charred by wildfires that destroyed a total of 32,400 acres of timber and 1,660 homes.
The Scouts and the Forest Service are working together to plant about 300,000 drought-resistant Loblolly pine seedlings over the next two years, with the first 50,000 plantings expected this year.
The ranch is about 7 miles northeast of Bastrop and 7 miles north of Bastrop State Park. The wildfires that began on Labor Day 2011 destroyed about 96 percent of the park, including most of the park's signature "Lost Pines."
