Community Fighting Pflugerville ISD for Buses

A fight for safety: later Thursday, one community in Pflugerville ISD will continue its fight for bus service to a new elementary school after the school board denied it. The board is holding a special meeting on the issue. It's a story KEYE-TV has been following since the summer.

About a third of the hundreds of kids who go to Barron Elementary School live next door at Dessau Fountain Estates. But looks are deceiving: though the two properties are next door neighbors, people living here say fencing separates the two properties and means more than a two mile long walk along a busy stretch of Howard Lane.

Its why they're asking the school district for bus service for their kids. Pflugerville ISD looked over the route, before and after the complaints, and determined it was safe. Legal counsel for the mobile home park still had concerns, now the park is appealing the boards decision.

So why not put a gate in the fence so kids can walk through? The parks attorney told us the path would run right between two private homes, several neighbors are against the idea, and the areas not designed for the more than 200 kids to walk through. The parks attorney told us busses are a safer alternative.

If you want to weigh in, the Special Board Meeting starts Thursday night at 6:30 in the Pflugerville ISD Board Room, ahead of the regular board meeting.

Property management officials from the park have previously told us if the board doesn't provide busses, they'll consider reevaluating the option of putting in a gate.
