Multi-Million Dollar Garage Scheduled To Build At Austin Airport

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport will begin construction on a $144 million parking garage in the coming months.

Last year, the Austin City Council approved the structure as a means for rental car companies to expand.

“It consists of building a three story parking garage on the east side of lot A. The top two levels will be used by the rental car operations. The lower level will be available for public parking,” said ABIA Spokesperson Jason Zielinski.

The project is scheduled to begin this spring and finish in 2015. In the meantime, travelers will be able to use the economy lot.

“It should have little to no impact for customers,” said Zielinski.

KEYE TV uncovered no taxpayer dollars will be used. Instead, fees from rental car customers will fund the entire project.

“So if a customer comes to rent a car, that $5.95 fee is automatically charged and has been charged up to this point,” said Zielinski.

However, under city law this multi-million dollar garage must have two percent of the budget go to art work. Vito Acconci is the artist for this project. The city anticipates it to be a destination for international travelers.

“Our total budget for this artwork is around $1.2 million,” said Art in Public Places Spokesperson Meghan Turner.

This will be one of 11 of pieces that make the airport a walking museum. The city will be asking for public input on the design in the coming months.
