Man Wanted In Connection To Austin Teen's Death Arrested
One of the two men wanted in connection to the death of a 13-year-old Austin girl has been arrested, according to police.
Jose Ricardo Garcia-Zavala (pictured), 23, was arrested for a parole violation warrant without incident Thursday at around 7 p.m. in the 7600 block of Bluff Springs Road, east of I-35 and south of William Cannon Drive.
Garcia-Zavala was wanted, along with Mario Angeles-Hernandez, 23, in connection to the death of Sophia Martinez. She was dropped off at a friend's doorstep on Jan. 1 after a night out. She was not breathing and was pronounced dead a short time later.
Mario Angeles-Hernandez has been charged with endangering a child and indecency with a child by contact. Garcia-Zavala has not yet been charged with any crime relating to Martinez's death.
According to an arrest affidavit, Sophia was supposed to spend the night with a 15-year-old friend. That friend told police a man picked them up and they went to a home on Lambs Lane near William Cannon Drive and Pleasant Valley Road.
That's where Angeles-Hernandez and Garcia-Zavala gave the girls alcohol, according to court documents. The 15-year-old told police Sophia drank nine cocktails – five with Gray Goose vodka and four with whiskey. The 15-year-old friend also saw Angeles-Hernandez kissing Sophia that night.
The friend fell asleep, and when she woke up she could not wake up Sophia. The affidavit states the 15-year-old asked about calling an ambulance but the men "did not want any drama at their house."
After 30 minutes, the men dropped both girls off at the home on Lakehurst Drive in Southeast Austin, according to the affidavit.
Police were able to find and interview the two men after the 15-year-old was able to tell them where they had spent the night. Court documents say Angeles-Hernandez admitted he made alcohol available to the girls and had kissed Sophia and touched her due to "temptation."
Garcia-Zavala admitted to police he was at the home.
Investigators are still awaiting toxicology results from Sophia's autopsy to determine her exact cause of death.
Mario Angeles-Hernandez is not in custody. IF you know of his whereabouts you are asked to call 911.
