Texas Lawmaker Wants To Cut Junk Food From Food Stamp Program

A Texas state representative has introduced a bill in this year's legislative session that would ban people from using food stamps to buy junk food.

The bill proposed by Rep. Richard Raymond (D-Laredo) would ban products like soft drinks, candy, potato chips and cookies.

Alcoholic beverages, non-food items like pet food or soap, vitamins, foods to be eaten in the store and hot foods are already prohibited under the current Supplemental Assistance Nutrition Program, or SNAP.

The bill did state that drinks that contain added sweetener but do not add any calories to the beverage would not be added to the list of banned products.

If passed, the Bill would take effect on Sept. 1, 2013
