East Texas School District To Train Teachers Carry Guns

UNION GROVE, Texas (AP) -- A small East Texas school district has become at least the second in Texas to implement a policy to allow select teachers and staff to carry concealed firearms on campus for school security.

The Union Grove school board voted unanimously Thursday evening to enact the policy. The district has about 750 students attending classes at its two adjoining campuses near Gladewater, about 110 miles east of Dallas.

School Superintendent Brian Gray says no decision has been made on how may faculty and staff members to train to carry weapons or if the district will provide the weapons.

The district, near Longview, is at least the second in Texas to authorize faculty and staff to carry weapons on campus. The first was the Harrold school district about 160 miles northwest of Dallas.
