Woman Killed In Weekend Hwy 71 Crash Identified

The woman killed in a car crash last Saturday on Hwy 71 in Southeast Austin has been identified by police.

Investigators say that at around 1 p.m., 35-year-old Joann Brothers was driving southbound on FM 973 and turned eastbound on Hwy 71 when another vehicle ran the red light and crashed into her driver’s-side door.

Brothers was transported to University Medical Center at Brackenridge Hospital with life-threatening injuries -- she died about nine hours later as a result of the injuries she sustained in the crash.

A passenger in her car was not injured. The driver and the four passengers of the other vehicle were also uninjured. The driver was issued citations for running a red light and expired driver’s license. It's unknown at this time if further charges will be filed.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call APD Vehicular Homicide Unit Detectives at 512-974-4724. This was Austin’s 78th traffic fatality of 2012.
