Cedar Park Council Considering New, Costly Signage
Cedar Park wants to install several new gateway signs around city limits. The startup costs are estimated at $500,000.
The city's 4-B Community Development Board wants to install nine signs in total. The $500,000 would basically be a down payment since the city would have to pay to have the signs built and pay for the right-of-ways at some of the locations.
"Seems kind of excessive," said Kathy Phillips.
The Cedar Park resident is weary about spending half-a-million dollars on so-called gateway signs.
"I guess it's pretty much what everyone is doing these days," said Phillips.
Audrey Wernecke sits on the city's 4-B Community Development Board. The group is proposing spending the money to help promote Cedar Park.
"Monument signs are a great way to brand the city and give the city community identity," said Wernecke.
The funding comes from a half-cent sales tax set aside to fund community and economic development projects.
"The monument sign project is an excellent project," said Councilman Stephen Thomas.
Thomas believes the gateway signs are good use of taxpayer money. "These funds are dedicated funds and so they don't have an impact on the city's operating budget or tax rates," he says.
But not everyone is sold on the idea.
"Honestly in my personal opinion we could put that money to better use," said Valerie Valentory.
She loves living in Cedar Park, but would rather see the Community Development Board invest the cash in other projects, like public parks.
"Were in suburbia, no justification spending that amount of money on signage," said Valentory.
Councilman Mitch Fuller says he plans to vote against the resolution. Fuller believes the city has greater needs, like better roads.
The Mayor says he supports the plan, but would like to start with just a couple of signs, to see if they do their job, which is to put Cedar Park on the map.
Council will vote on the resolution at Thursday's meeting.
