Vigil Held For Austin Teen That Died On New Year's Day
We're learning more about the 13-year-old girl who mysteriously died on New Year's Day. Sophia Martinez showed up on a family member's doorstep - unconscious - after a night out with friends.
A vigil was held Wednesday night in her memory outside the home where she died. It was a difficult night for family and friends -- dozens of people, of all ages, braved the cold temperatures to pay their respects to the girl they say always had a smile on her face.
"They worked on her for a good while, but couldn't get a pulse or get her breathing," says Sophia's mother, Mary Herrera.
She says her daughter was supposed to stay at her cousin's house, but left. "My wife told me she went to the store. When she got back Sophia was gone," says Ruben Vasquez, Sophia's cousin.
Herrera desperately tried to get a hold of her daughter. "She took off, but we didn't know where she was because she wouldn't tell nobody," she says.
Hours later, Herrera received a text from her daughter. Not knowing it would be the last time she heard from her. "She texted me and said she was sorry and not to be mad and she said she would be back. She was going to get a ride back but never showed up," she says.
The investigation into Sophia's death continues. Austin police tells us an autopsy has been performed, but they are waiting for the toxicology report before issuing a cause of death.
