Caldwell County Official Gets Out Of Traffic Ticket For $1

A Caldwell County official was able to get out of a traffic ticket for only $1. A dash cam video from a Caldwell County Sheriff's Office cruiser clocked the justice of the peace of that same county doing 83 in a 55 mph construction zone.

Justice of the Peace Johnny Spriggs was pulled over for traveling 28 mph over the speed limit.  The published ticket price for the violation was $300, but Spriggs only paid $1 and court costs, according to court records.

But Spriggs says it was the Caldwell County District Attorney's Office that dismissed the ticket, not him.

"That one with the judge will not happen again, that was a mistake on my offices part," said Richard Hicks the Caldwell County District Attorney.

Both Spriggs and the DA in Caldwell County say they don't have the resources to try every traffic case, so deferrals are used to plea many cases down such as this one.

Still, both men said there will be no deals moving forward like this one.
