Pedestrian Killed In South Austin Over The Weekend


Police say a man was killed Saturday night while trying to cross a South Austin street.

It happened at around 8:50 p.m. in the 4300 block of South 1st Street, just south of the Ben White Boulevard intersection.

Investigators say a 1996 Chevrolet Astro Van was traveling northbound on South 1st St. when it struck a pedestrian attempting to cross westbound. The pedestrian, identified as a 37-year-old Vincent Lopez IV, was transported to the University Medical Center Brackenridge, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The driver of the van remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. No charges are expected to be filed, according to police.

This is Austin's 9th fatal traffic crash and the 10th traffic fatality of 2013. At this time in 2012, there were four traffic fatalities.
