3 Teens Arrested For San Marcos Hatchery Building Fire

Three teenagers were arrested Tuesday for a fire that severely damaged a historic fish hatchery building in San Marcos last weekend.

Two boys, ages 14 and 16, and 14-year-old girl, were charged with arson and criminal mischief in the fire that broke out at about 10 p.m. Sunday at the Old Fish Hatchery Community Building in San Marcos Plaza Park.

San Marcos police say the building, which was constructed in 1894-95, suffered major damage to the back stairs and porch and interior smoke and water damage.  Initial repair costs are estimated at between $75,000 and $150,000.

The building originally served as the headquarters for the first fish hatchery in the U.S. located west of the Mississippi River.

The building will be out of service until repairs can be made. The investigation of the fire continues, according to police.
