Fire Disables Galveston-Based Cruise Ship In Gulf Of Mexico
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Carnival Cruise Lines says an engine room fire has disabled the cruise ship Triumph about 150 miles off the Yucatan Peninsula with 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew members on board.
A statement on Carnival's website says nobody was hurt and automatic extinguishers put out the fire before it could spread from the aft engine room.
Triumph cruises from Galveston to the Caribbean.
Carnival says a tugboat will tow it to Progreso, Mexico, where passengers will be flown back to the United States. It's expected to arrive in Progreso on Wednesday.
Carnival says passengers will get a full refund, plus an equal credit for a future cruise.
The company says people scheduled on Feb. 11 and Feb. 16 cruises will get a full refund and a discount on a future cruise.
