Gov. Perry: Boy Scouts Should Keep No-Gay Policy

America’s longest serving governor, Rick Perry, said the Boy Scouts of America should not soften its strict ban on openly gay members and volunteers.

Governor Perry, and Eagle Scout himself, gave his opinion in front of a hundreds of scouts and their leaders from around Texas Saturday. After welcoming an annual gathering of boy scouts at the capitol, Governor Perry reaffirmed his conservative stance.

Perry said the organization should embrace its values, and disagreed that allowing members of all sexual preferences would make the organization more tolerant.

"Scouting is not a place where sexuality should be the intersection,” Perry said. “Scouting is about teaching a substantial amount of life lessons, sexuality is not one of them, never has been and doesn't need to be."

The Boy Scouts reaffirmed the “no-gays” policy seven months ago, but the proposal is expected to be discussed and voted on at a nation board meeting in Irving, Texas that begins on Monday.
