Man Tasered And Arrested, Suspected of Pedicab Theft
Austin Police arrested a man for stealing a pedicab early Thursday morning, after a brief struggle with an officer.
The officer responded to a call at Red Devil Rides, a pedicab business on Pedernales Street just south of E. 7th Street, just after 4 a.m. on Thursday.
One of its employees had just parked her pedicab outside and went inside the business, and when she went back outside, it was gone. The manager told the officer he saw a Hispanic man get on the pedicab, but because of the high number of pedicab drivers in town for South by Southwest, he did not realize the man was stealing the pedicab.
Less than an hour later, the officer spotted the suspect, and the pedicab near Chalmers Avenue and E. Cesar Chavez.
When he asked the suspect to get off the pedicab, the arrest affidavit states the suspect refused and began to fight with the officer. The officer tried to use his Taser but the affidavit said it did not work.
Less than two minutes later, several other officers arrived and took the suspect, Luis Garcia-Lorente, into custody.
Garcia-Lorente has been charged with theft.
The pedicab is worth $6,000.
