State Rep 'Deeply, Deeply Sorry' For Austin DWI Arrest

A Democratic state lawmaker says she's "deeply, deeply sorry" for her drunken driving arrest following a South Austin crash that injured her, another driver and bicyclist last week.

Naomi Gonzalez of El Paso crashed her BMW into another car, which then hit a cyclist before dawn Thursday near the intersection of Barton Springs Road and South Congress Avenue. Gonzalez and two others were treated for minor injuries.

She addressed the House on Monday, saying she was "grateful no one was seriously injured."

Gonzalez's voice cracked as she apologized and said "nothing like this" would happen again. She thanked her colleagues for their "understanding."

Lawmakers responded with a standing ovation and some gave her warm hugs and high-fives. Flowers were also left on Gonzalez's desk in the chamber.

The 34-year-old has been charged with driving while intoxicated.
