WilCo Ranked #1 Healthiest County in Texas


Williamson County has been ranked the number one healthiest county in Texas.

The 2013 annual report done by the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation looked at 232 Texas Counties.

Travis County came in at number 12.

The study looked at health care, physical activity, restaurants and mortality rates.

Round Rock Chamber of Commerce Doug Kurkul tells us healthcare is big in the county.

“Here in Round Rock alone we have five hospitals, a nursing school and a medical school,” said Kurkul.

He says fitness and healthy eating is also a priority.

Pita Fusion is one healthy restaurant in the area.

“We do everything on pita sandwiches and salads. Some of our most popular is grilled chicken, Philly steak, California club,” said Co-Founder Timothy Calandro.

Calandro says some customers count on their low-calorie options for their diets.

“We can do from 200 to 300 people from 11 to 3. Today alone we did 1,500 in sales before 2 o'clock,” said Calandro.

Community-wide accomplishments will be celebrated at the WilCo Wellness Alliance’s first annual Spring into Action event on April 4, 2013 from 3-6 p.m. at the Old Settlers Association Main Hall in Round Rock.
