State Rep. Could Face Additional Charges For Downtown Austin DWI Crash

UPDATE March 15: Arrest affidavit shows Gonzalez was twice the legal limit. Read the story.

State Representative Naomi Gonzalez (D-El Paso) is out on bond following her arrest on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

The freshman lawmaker was arrested early Thursday morning following a chain-reaction crash at the intersection of South Congress and Barton Springs.

Gonzalez's chief of staff did acknowledge the democrat's arrest, but didn't go into details.

"I have no comment at the moment, I will get back to you," said Ariane Marion.

According to Austin police, the 34-year old lawmaker was allegedly driving drunk at around 2 a.m. when she slammed into the back of another car.

"Reports indicate the BMW rear ended the Fiat at the intersection, the Fiat slammed into the cyclist," said Senior Officer Jermaine Kilgore.

APD says Gonzalez was taken to the hospital where she submitted to a blood alcohol test.  It could be a couple of days before the lab results are ready.

The cyclist and several passengers riding in the Fiat were taken to the hospital with none life-threatening injuries.

Gonzalez is charged with DWI, but APD says she could face additional criminal charges.
