Overnight Hail Creates Icy Roads Around Austin


While you were sleeping, a hail storm, lightning, and winds rip through parts of the Austin area. Parts of North Austin and Cedar Park looked like they had been hit by a winter storm, with roads and sections of highways covered in ice.

The storm hit around 2:30 to 3 a.m. Wednesday. Austin Police say they received between 20-25 alarm calls, mostly near Lakeline Mall but also around the Domain and Metric Boulevard in North Austin. Police believe hail hitting the glass of businesses set off the alarms, but no damage was reported. Cedar Park police also reported no damage or accidents. KEYE TV crews drove around the area near Lakeline Mall and did not see any damage.

While the hail ice began melting around 4 a.m., patches of ice and lots of slick spots still remained around 6 a.m. Wednesday.
